Institute of Low Temperature Science

I started my study on glaciers in April 2000 as a student of doctoral program in Hokkaido University. The focus of my study was dynamics of mountain glaciers, particularly on basal flow mechanisms under temperate glaciers.
My first scientific field campaign was in Koryto Koryto Glacier in Kamchatka from July to September 2000. I constructed a wire strain measurement system which enables us to know continuous and high resolution strain on a glacier surface. In 2001, I stayed in Swiss Federal Institute of Technology for six months. I joined a research project on Unteraargletscher and spent two months in total on this glaceir. GPS survey and borehole depth measurements gave interesting results on short term variations in glaceir motion.
After the field studies, I used most of time in 2002 for reading books to develop a numerical glaceir flow model. The consequence of the study for three years was my Ph. D. thesis entitled "Short-term flow variations under the control of basal conditions in a temperate valley glacier".@
