Hot water drilling at Langhovde Glacier, East Antarctica

Langhovde Glacier

Langhovde Glacier is an outlet glacier located at Soya Coast in East Antarctica. The lower part of the glacier is bounded by slow-moving ice and bedrock on its east and west, respectively. The ice is floating within several kilometers from the terminus. The glacier discharges ice into Lutzholm Bay through 2-3 km wide and 200-300 thick calving front at a rate more than 100 m a-1. We have chosen this glacier because of these typical features as a fast flowing outlet glacier in Antarctica, as well as its proximity to Syowa Station, a Japanese research station located at 20 km from the glacier.
