As the second field season of our JSPS project "The role of ice
dynamics in the rapid retreat of calving glaciers", we spent a month
in the Southern Patagonia Icefield from December 2013 to January
2014. The focus of our field activity this season was lake
measurements in front of calving glaciers. The measurements are for
better understanding of the interaction between lake water and calving
glacier. We visited the lakes of Glaciar Perito Moreno, Upsala and
Viedma for water property measurements, lake depth souding and water
sampling. We also worked on Glaciar Perito Moreno to continue our
study on ice dynamics, thickness change and calving process.
This field campaign was carried out with international collaboration
with Pedro Skvarca, Museo del Hielo Patagonico, Argentina, and Nozomu
Naito, Hiroshima Institute of Technology. We thank Hielo y Aventura,
Prefectura Naval Argentina and Viva Patagonia, for providing logistic
support to the field activities.
