January 10, 2024, Glaciar Amalia, southwestern Patagonia in Chile
After 15 years of visits to lake-terminating glaciers,
this is my first trip to an ocean-terminating glacier in Patagonia.
Glaciar Amalia is situated on the western side of the Southern Patagonia Icefield.
We travelled through a complex fjord system with "Pelagic", a small boat based in Puerto Natales.
Under a difficult environment with wind and rain (as usual in this region),
ocean measurements and sampling were completed near the glacier front.
Great experience with wonderful colleagues and boat crews. Thank you, all!
